The municipality of Assen wants to make it easier and more attractive to rent out a room in your own home. That is why the Municipal Executive proposes to completely abolish the costs for a permit for landlady rental from 1 January 2026.

The municipality is thus joining a national campaign to encourage landlady rental.

Anyone who now wants to rent out a room in their own home, so-called landlady rental, still pays 660 euros for it. “That amount is of course not that attractive,” says Eddy Beuker on behalf of the municipality of Assen. “We hope that by removing this possible barrier, more people will consider renting out a room.”

The proposal is part of the fee ordinance, a list of things you have to pay for at the municipality, which the municipal council will discuss in December. If he agrees, the permit costs will be reduced to zero euros by 2026.

Landlady rental, where a tenant lives without a shared household, is seen as an accessible way to create living space. It can offer a solution for, for example, students, young people or people who are looking for a temporary place.

According to Beuker, it can also offer advantages for the landlord: “It not only provides some pocket money, but it can also provide greater access to the home and the neighborhood. This used to happen much more often, but now we see that few permits are applied for.”

Although the costs will soon disappear, applying for a permit will remain mandatory. This is necessary, among other things, for registration with the Tax Authorities.

Assen wants to realize at least 3,000 new homes by 2030, but is also looking at creative solutions to make better use of existing living space. According to them, hospital rental fits well within that ambition.
