In the 10 kilometer long scratch competition, Vanlathem (class MC1) showed himself to be particularly alert. The Spanish top favorite Ricardo Ten Argiles placed an attack early in the race. In the confusion that followed, Vanlathem took the initiative and joined the Russian Ivan Ermakov in pursuit.
The Spaniard was too strong and took gold, but Vanlathem held on and rode to bronze, good for his first ever podium finish at a world championship.
