Düsseldorf coach Markus beginning gestures on the sidelines

As of: October 17, 2025 10:13 p.m

Markusbeginn may have imagined his first game as coach of Fortuna Düsseldorf differently. Fortuna lost to Braunschweig 1:2 (0:2) – a negative series ended for Eintracht after four defeats in a row.

The goals in Eintracht Braunschweig’s third win of the season were scored by Christian Conteh (25th) and Max Marie (39th). Braunschweig’s coach Heiner Backhaus can breathe a sigh of relief after four defeats in a row. “We have a young team that played great football today“, Backhaus told the sports show.

In the table, Eintracht (10 points, -5 goals) moved past their opponents Fortuna Düsseldorf (10 points, -9 goals).

For Markusbeginn, 51, this is a nuisance. He was signed as the new coach of Fortuna Düsseldorf before the international break. But his debut was not a successful one. “We weren’t brave enough”said Düsseldorf’s new coach at the beginning of the sports show. He was especially referring to the first half – in which his team played quite poorly.

At halftime, Düsseldorf’s fans whistled at the Fortuna players. Fortuna was two goals behind: Düsseldorf’s goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier didn’t look good when Conteh hit from a tight angle. Kastenmeier had no chance when Marie scored.

Joker Rasmussen wakes up Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf got better after the restart – and that was also due to a joker: Christian Rasmussen, 22, was brought in by the club from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer. Rasmussen has sometimes hinted at his ability, but has not yet shown it consistently. This may be why he initially only sat on the bench in the new coach’s first game.

After coming on as a substitute, the Dane showed that he can definitely make the difference in the 2nd Bundesliga. Braunschweig’s goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann saved his free kick from 20 meters, taken with the inside of his foot and with a lot of feeling (65th). Seconds later, Rasmussen made a remarkable pass from the outside of the foot for Kenneth Schmidt, who only had to push in from close range to make it 1-2.

In Braunschweig they thank their goalkeeper

But in the end only the guests from Braunschweig celebrated, also because their goalkeeper Hoffmann made two strong saves in the final phase. First he saved a long-range shot from Rasmussen (77th), then he was also there against Schmidt (90th + 7th).
