An unexpected find causes excitement at Het Palet primary school in Hoogeveen. During preparations for a renovation of the school building, a mysterious safe was discovered in the basement.
The key was missing, so it remained unclear for a long time what was behind the heavy lock. Students fantasized wildly: was there a forgotten sandwich in it? Or maybe items from the war? “It’s very exciting, you think all the time: What’s in the safe?”
Yesterday the mystery finally came to an end, when a specialist managed to break open the lock. It NOS Youth News was there to capture the special moment.
Behind the removed lock there turned out to be another thick metal door. Once that too was open, the contents emerged: an old floppy disk and a small wooden box.
What was inside exceeded all expectations. In the box, the students found old coins and a number of letters, including a document that was more than 150 years old. The letter, dated 1870 and signed by the mayor at the time, was about land tax.
Two students witnessed the unveiling and proudly showed their finds to their classmates. They responded enthusiastically: “Super cool!”
