With a brace, Moussa Sylla has shot FC Schalke 04 to the top of the 2nd Bundesliga table. The striker scored the first two goals in the deserved 3-0 (2-0) win in the top game at Hannover 96. At the same time, the 25-year-old ended his goal drought of 567 minutes with his goals in the 3rd and 14th minutes. Substitute Christian Gomis (85th) added further in the final phase.
After their fourth win in a row, Schalke are in first place at least until Sunday. Then SV Elversberg can move back to the top with a win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Hannover 96 has to be careful not to miss the connection to the promotion places after only one win from the last games.
In front of 49,000 spectators in the sold-out Heinz von Heiden Arena, the guests from Gelsenkirchen dominated the first half hour. They put the opponent under pressure with strong pressing and forced them to make mistakes. Sylla (3rd) took advantage of one of these mistakes early on. Eleven minutes later he had no trouble heading the ball into the goal from close range after a corner.
It was only after about 30 minutes that Hannover got better into the game and made some offensive moves. Unfortunately for the hosts, the goals from Mustapha Bundu (16th) and Benjamin Källman (35th) were both whistled for offside.
Fortuna Düsseldorf fails to premiere under coach Beginn
Markusbeginn botched his debut as the new coach of Fortuna Düsseldorf and continued the Rhinelander’s negative home series. The Düsseldorf team, still winless in front of their own audience this season, lost to Eintracht Braunschweig 1:2 (0:2) in front of 31,188 spectators and fell behind Lower Saxony in the table. For the guests, after ten games without a win against Fortuna, it was their first win in more than eight years and their first success in the current season after six games without three points.
The hosts’ newly assembled team seemed very unsettled for a long time, even under the new head coach. After a fine individual performance by the strong Christian Conteh, who surprised Fortuna keeper Florian Kastenmeier with a shot into the short corner from a tight angle (25th minute), the guests took the lead. It was Braunschweig’s 1000th second division goal. Before the break, Max Marie increased the score to 2-0 (39′).
Conteh even had further opportunities for Eintracht against the previously weak Düsseldorf team, who only came into the game better after Christian Rasmussen was substituted on. But Kenneth Schmidt (65th) only managed to score the next goal.
