From noon onwards, everyone in Ostend could come and taste soup at the site of the old swimming pool. The annual soup distribution has been a tradition for decades, but social workers emphasize that it is needed now more than ever.
“We as a social sector find this very important, especially for people in poverty. One day in a year is far too little. It is necessary all year round, especially now with the cuts being implemented by the governments,” says Gudrun Rosseel of the Association of Resistance to Poverty in Ostend. “We are actually heading for a bloodbath. We are really concerned about the future and the next generations.”
