The US President hints that he could withdraw the games from World Cup venues run by Democrats. FIFA reacts – and one fact will probably put a stop to the plan.
“If someone is doing a bad job and I feel that the conditions (for hosting World Cup games) are unsafe, then I would call Gianni, the phenomenal head of Fifa, and I would say: ‘Let’s move it somewhere else.’ And he would do it,” Trump said.
With his statement, the 79-year-old indicated that the major football event was being exploited in the dispute with several US cities governed by Democrats. Fifa boss Infantino is always looking to get close to the Republican (you can read more about this here). Of the eleven World Cup host cities in the USA, seven cities, Boston, Atlanta, East Rutherford, Houston, Miami Gardens, Kansas City and Philadelphia, are currently governed by Democrats.
However: According to t-online information, Fifa President Infantino cannot simply order that the status of a host city be withdrawn and the games planned there be played elsewhere. There are fixed contracts with the “host cities”; if FIFA breaches the contract, there would probably be high demands for recourse.
FIFA reacted cautiously to Trump’s statements on Wednesday. “Safety is a top priority at all Fifa events worldwide,” said the world association when asked by t-online. He continued: “Security is the responsibility of the government and it decides what is in the best interest of public safety. We hope that each of our 16 venues will be ready and meet all the necessary requirements.”
Trump and his administration have been talking about escalating crime problems in US cities and states governed by Democrats for some time. Against the wishes of the governors and mayors actually responsible for this, they have already sent the National Guard to Washington DC, Los Angeles and Portland – to combat “Antifa and other domestic terrorists”. The Democrats accuse the president of abusing his power and point out, among other things, the comparatively low crime rates and the overall quiet situation in the affected cities.
