The price of orange juice on the world market has halved during the current year, but this is not yet visible on store shelves, says Helsingin Sanomat.
The futures prices of orange juice concentrate have dropped a whopping 60 percent from the readings at the turn of the year. Still, this is not reflected in the prices on store shelves.
Kesko’s director of purchasing and sales Carita Rissanen according to the chain lowers prices when there is an opportunity to do so. According to him, the prices of orange juices in Kesko have already started to fall. For example, the prices of Valio’s Orange juice and Eckes-Granin’s Brazil fresh juices have started to decrease.
On average, the prices of orange juices sold on cold shelves at Kesko have dropped by about ten percent compared to July, Rissanen tells HS.
Also in the S group, prices have decreased by a few percent over the course of the fall compared to the summer.
Senior economist at PTT Päivi Kujala estimates that the share of the raw material in the price of full juice is about 30 percent. The price change of the raw material purchased from the world market is reflected in the food manufacturer’s prices in 6–9 months.
It takes another second before it is reflected in the price on the store shelf. So the consumer may have to wait until next summer for the price to drop.
