Shortly before the start of the Olympic season, former ski world champion Mathieu Faivre announced his retirement. The 33-year-old Frenchman announced this decision on Instagram on Wednesday evening. “The decision was not easy for me because I have dedicated my life to this sport and fulfilled my dreams,” he said in a video.
Faivre, who won World Cup gold in the giant slalom and parallel race in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 2021 and the team title in St. Moritz in 2017, continued: “Skiing has ignited a flame in me that has guided me through all these years. After struggling for several seasons to keep this flame burning, it shines on this big Olympic day in Beijing to be extinguished.” At the Games in Beijing in 2022 he won bronze in the giant slalom, but setbacks followed, also due to injuries.
