SC Magdeburg didn’t show any weaknesses in the Handball Champions League at Pick Szeged. The defending champion won against the Hungarian runner-up despite a weak phase after the break. SCM circuit runner Oscar Bergendahl was unstoppable that evening.

Defending champion SC Magdeburg remains on course in the Handball Champions League. The Saxony-Anhalters won 34:30 at Pick Szeged on Wednesday. Thanks to their success against the Hungarians, they celebrated their fifth win in their fifth group game.

In the pick arena it was initially an even game with a few goals. The goalkeepers initially didn’t have much to ask for. The guests extended their small lead midway through the first half. They continued to score very well and were now also better defensively. Towards the end of the first half, Magdeburg gained a four-goal lead for the first time, and at the break the score was 18:15. 86 percent of the SCM throws ended up in the net; the pick goalkeepers, including former Magdeburg native Tobias Thulin, were only able to save twice.

SCM “hectic” after the break

After the break, Bennet Wiegert’s team initially lost track. It took eight and a half minutes for the first goal. Szeget couldn’t really capitalize on this. Wiegert reacted to a timeout in the 40th minute: “Hey guys, just under ten minutes only one goal. And that’s just us. Everything we do is hectic. Stay on schedule.” His team slowly but surely got back into the flow.

Bergendahl couldn’t be stopped by the circle

Magdeburg took advantage of two outnumbered situations to gain a decisive four-goal lead (27:23/48th). Szeged tried to make quick shots but made too many mistakes. Circulator Oscar Bergendahl’s 30:25 (53rd) was the preliminary decision. In any case, the Swede was a big factor in the victory in the absence of Magnus Saugstrup, who stayed in Magdeburg for personal reasons. He was almost unstoppable, especially in the final phase. With seven goals, the national player became the best SCM shooter under the eyes of national coach Michael Apelgren, who also trains Pick. Not a single attempt went wrong. Overall, Magdeburg also benefited from poor goalkeeping performance at Szeged.
