What’s next for Marc-André ter Stegen? A departure from Barcelona recently seemed quite possible. But the goalkeeper apparently has other plans.
Marc-André ter Stegen apparently wants to stay at FC Barcelona. The German national goalkeeper reiterated this, as reported by the Spanish newspaper “AS”. Ter Stegen has a contract with the Catalans that runs until 2028.
However, staying in Barcelona could be a problem for his ambitions in the national team. Because: National coach Julian Nagelsmann has already made it clear that Ter Stegen must have sufficient match practice to take part in the 2026 World Cup.
After his second back operation, the 33-year-old is currently working on his comeback. However, there is great competition in goal at the Spanish top club: with Wojciech Szczęsny and Joan García, who was signed in the summer, there are two other top keepers in Barça’s squad. García in particular enjoys a high reputation under coach Hansi Flick, but is also currently injured.
While ter Stegen is fighting for his place at Barça, another goalkeeper in the DFB team has taken his chance for the time being: Oliver Baumann is currently appointed as the Barcelona goalkeeper’s representative. The Hoffenheimer has recently impressed with stable performances. After the win against Northern Ireland, Nagelsmann emphasized that there was currently no goalkeeping problem in the DFB team.
There has been speculation in the Spanish media for months that Ter Stegen could look for a new club in the winter. The former Gladbach player has been playing for Blaugrana since 2014.
