D’Angelo’s eldest son lost his mother and father in 2025.

D’Angelo’s death shocked the music world. His eldest son, Michael D’Angelo Archer II, also known by his stage name Swayvo Twain, shared an old interview with his parents on Instagram on Tuesday evening (October 14) in which complicated family relationships are discussed. The video allows both D’Angelo and his ex-partner, soul singer Angie Stone, to have their say. Accordingly, the musician could not always be there for his son in the past.

What was the relationship between D’Angelo and his son?

Swayvo, who is a musician himself, has not yet released a public statement regarding his father’s death. Nevertheless, the video and the timing of the posting in his Instagram story suggest a rather ambivalent relationship.

The shared interview reveals that in the five years between his debut album BROWN SUGAR and its follow-up VOODOO, D’Angelo took some time off to spend time with family and watch his son grow up. Angie Stone says in the conversation that after this time there was a certain estrangement and D’Angelo distanced himself from her and her son. Despite these difficulties, she emphasizes that it was a relationship full of love but also complex feelings.

In 2000, D’Angelo’s mega-hit “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” was released, which made him famous worldwide (also because of the sexually charged video). But the more he was viewed as a sex symbol, the more D’Angelo struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. In 2005, he was arrested for drunk driving and possession of cocaine and marijuana. A week after his conviction on these charges in September 2005, he was also involved in a car accident in which he was rumored to be seriously injured.

Swayvo Twain is not D’Angelo’s only child. The musician had a daughter named Imani in 1999 and another son named Morocco in 2010.

Swayvo just lost his mother in March 2025. Angie Stone died in a tragic road accident after being thrown from a bus in a collision.

Swayvo reflected in a previous post that he long tried to break free from the shadows of his famous parents, but eventually learned to embrace their legacies with pride. He now stands alone to carry the musical and personal legacy of both parents.
