Matteo Berrettini beats Giulio Zeppieri and wins the all-blue derby at the ATP 250 in Stockholm. A return to victory for the world number 61, who defeated his compatriot and friend with a score of 6-4 6-2. Matteo will now face the Frenchman Humbert in the second round, but Berrettini was seen to be in good physical shape. Zeppieri also did his part, playing well but lacked the power needed to counter the former top ten.

the match

In the first set Matteo immediately went ahead, managing the situation, except in the tenth game, when Zeppieri had four balls to counterbreak and go up to 5-5. Maybe it would have changed things, but Berrettini did well to repel the attack and then close the set 6-5. In the second there was no match, with the Wimbledon finalist very solid on serve and also from the baseline, scoring four games in a row from 2-2, with the break in the fifth game which essentially ended the match.

Berrettini’s words

“I think I fought very well. I know Giulio even though we had never faced each other before – said Berrettini after the match -. I knew he was playing well, I started the match with the right mental approach and that’s the most important thing, especially in the first match of a tournament, when you have to adapt to the conditions. I felt better and better, point after point. I really hope I can do better than last year. There’s also a good group of Italians here. Stockholm, they have a very good Italian restaurant, I recommend it”, Matteo then said smiling.
