The Ukrainian woman submitted hundreds of false applications and received 300 thousand crowns from the Czech state, equivalent to almost 12,500 euros. She also tried to extract an additional amount of more than €100,000, but failed.

The Klatovy City Court sentenced the 28-year-old Ukrainian citizen to two years in prison. She submitted fictitious applications for compensation to provide free housing to Ukrainians temporarily housed in the Czech Republic.

“The accused pleaded guilty and will repay the amount. The verdict is final,” said the presiding judge, Pyotr Shperk.

False information

The fraud took place from March 2023 to February 2024. “In her applications, she provided false information about her legal ownership of 83 objects in the Czech Republic, and stated that she provided free shelter there to foreigners receiving temporary protection in connection with the armed conflict in Ukraine,” prosecutor Barbora Maresová said.

She added that T. had submitted many hundreds of false statements using personal information of people she found on social networks.

The woman, who moved to the Netherlands, expressed remorse for what she had done during a preliminary hearing. She explained that a difficult phase of life pushed her to commit fraud. According to her, after previously moving to Prague to work, she could no longer afford housing rent and other expenses. Moreover, she said she had to pay more than 2,000 euros for her son’s insurance.
