Today, an amendment to the Asylum Emergency Measures Act was sent to the Council of State for urgent advice, reports Minister David van Weel (Asylum and Migration). This amendment, a so-called novella, stipulates that assistance to aliens residing illegally in the Netherlands will not be punishable.
The consultation phase of the novella ran until September 26. 672 responses were received and another 9 responses from parties contacted by the ministry. These responses have been processed in recent weeks.
Minister Van Weel has indicated that he wants to present the novella to the House of Representatives as soon as possible after the advice of the Council of State.
The outgoing cabinet attaches great importance to the Emergency Asylum Measures Act. This should simplify the asylum procedure, encourage foreigners to cooperate with their procedure and contribute to limiting the influx of asylum seekers.
