Marco Sturm suffered his first defeat as head coach in the North American professional ice hockey league NHL. His Boston Bruins lost 3-4 at home to the Tampa Bay Lightning early lunchtime on Columbus Day, a national holiday in the United States, after starting the season with three wins.
In a turbulent game at home, the Bruins got off to the worst possible start. With the first shot of the game, Anthony Cirelli scored to give the Lightning the lead (2nd minute) and ultimately make it 2-0 (14th minute). After just 39 seconds in the second period, Yanni Gourde made it 3-0.
Only then did ex-national coach Sturm’s team wake up. Casey Mittelstadt (22nd), Jordan Harris (26th) and Morgan Geekie (32nd) kept Boston in the game when Pontus Holmberg (32nd) conceded a goal – but both goals were nailed down in the final third.
