New attack on the ski flying world record: Jumps of up to 270 meters will soon be possible in Planica.

The Slovenian government approved funding with which a 2.69 million euro expansion of the already huge ski jump can be realized by November 2027. The current record is 254.5 m, set by the Slovenian Domen Prevc in March 2025 in Planica.

“This year, the FIS issued new regulations that increase the maximum allowable height difference from the end of the jump table to the lowest point from 135 to 140 meters. In this context, we have prepared an investment proposal that has now been approved by the government,” said Jelko Gros from the Nordic Center in Planica.

For more than three decades, Planica and the “Monsterbakken” in Vikersund, Norway, have been vying for the world record. The Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi proved what is theoretically possible in April 2024.

The three-time winner of the Four Hills Tournament even flew to 291.0 m on a temporarily constructed ski jump in Iceland, but this mark is not considered a ski flying world record.
