Alphonso Davies has been injured for more than seven months. Now he spoke about the difficult time without the ball, which is about to end. Two colleagues could also be used again this year.
After months of rehab, Alphonso Davies finally sees light at the end of the tunnel. The FC Bayern Munich full-back continues to work on his comeback – and is confident about it.
“The future looks good, the hardest part of the rehab is now over for me. I’m excited and looking forward to rejoining the team and playing the sport I love,” the Canadian international said on the club website.
In March, the 24-year-old tore his cruciate ligament while playing for the Canadian national team. As a result of the injury, there were disagreements between FC Bayern and the Canadian association – at times there was even talk of possible legal action. The club later announced that there would be financial compensation.
Davies has been training individually with the ball since the beginning of September. The club left it open exactly when he would return to team training. Davies himself explained: “I’m running and training well. I just need to get a bit more muscle mass on my right leg.”
In the interview he also gave insights into how emotionally difficult this long period of time was for him when he was unable to pursue his job. After the diagnosis, he initially thought: “Oh wow, it’s going to be a long journey. The process is mentally more difficult than physically. The muscles will come back on their own. But not knowing how long you’ll be out and whether you’ll be able to do certain things – that’s hard.”
And further: “Sometimes the body says: ‘I don’t want to anymore.’ Then you have to be mentally strong. That’s the only way to make it. If you don’t do it yourself, no one else will do it for you.” But now he is optimistic.
FC Bayern are currently without Jamal Musiala and Hiroki Ito. Musiala is suffering from a dislocated ankle and a fibula fracture, while Ito is out with a metatarsal fracture. The club hopes that all three players can return later this year.
Despite the failures, FC Bayern got off to a perfect start to the season – ten wins in ten competitive games. At the weekend (Saturday, 6:30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker) the top game is against second-placed Borussia Dortmund. Davies said: “I can’t wait to get on the pitch with my teammates, help them win games and fight for our goals.”
