Things continue to go well for Thomas Müller at his new club. This time the German scored late to win – and put Vancouver at the top of the table.

Thomas Müller secured the Vancouver Whitecaps’ place at the top of the Western Conference table with a last-minute goal. In the seventh minute of injury time, the 36-year-old scored the decisive 2-1 win at Orlando City. This means that the Canadians have the best chance of securing home advantage for the MLS playoffs before the last matchday of the main round.

“I trust the team, I love the team,” said Müller after the final whistle – and also appeared emotional when he spontaneously hugged a reporter in front of the camera. Moments later he shouted, “Let’s keep going.”

For Müller it was the sixth goal in his sixth appearance for the Whitecaps. With 63 points, the club took first place in the West one game day before the end of the regular season. The last home game against FC Dallas is next Saturday (local time).

Orlando took the lead through Dagur Dan Thórhallsson in the 24th minute. After Nelson Pierre’s equalizer in the final phase, it was Müller who made the difference again. The offensive player turned the game around with a well-placed shot. Müller then emphasized: “It’s a good feeling to know that we don’t lose every game when we’re behind. We even win.”

Lionel Messi also proved to be accurate again. With his goals 25 and 26 this season, the Argentine led Inter Miami to a clear 4-0 win against Atlanta United. His club secured third place in the Eastern Conference. Messi is currently clearly leading the top scorers list – Müller is further behind due to his late change during the season.
