Despite falling behind, 1. FC Köln celebrated their second win of the season in the women’s Bundesliga against Union Berlin.

FC won 2-1 (2-1) on Sunday evening and moved up to tenth place in the table. Cologne has one less game in its account than the competition, as the canceled game against Leverkusen still has to be rescheduled. Union is two places ahead of FC with seven points.

Vogt and Jessen turn the game for Cologne

Union took the lead with the first opportunity of the game. After a soulful lob pass from Berlin’s Katja Orschmann to the six-yard box, Sophie Weidauer (7th) got to the ball and beat Cologne keeper Irina Fuchs, who was caught on the wrong foot. Cologne let the ball run through their own ranks, but were still too flawed in their offensive game. On the other side, a free kick from Berlin’s Athanasia Moraitou (14th) flew just past the right post from around 26 meters.

As the playing time increased, FC got better into the game and finally equalized after a standard situation. After a free kick from Adriana Achcinska hit the second post, Marina Hegering headed the ball back into the middle, where Laura Vogt (28th) was there and scored to make it 1-1. In a similar situation, Hegering headed past the Union goal to the right three minutes later (31′).

With the next chance, Cologne took the lead after a counterattack. Anna-Lena Stolze played the ball steeply to Sandra Jessen (34th), who let a defender get out in the penalty area and then hit the goal past Berlin keeper Cara Bösl, who was rushing out of her box. After Tomke Schneider fouled Laura Donhauser, Cologne were awarded a penalty, but Stolze (45+4) hit the crossbar.

In the second half, Cologne concentrated on defending and was largely able to keep Union away from their own goal. In a promising Cologne counterattack, Jessen’s (59th) first contact was not optimal, so her attempt was blocked by a Berliner. In the 72nd minute, Cologne goalkeeper Fuchs prevented the equalizer with a lightning reflex after Jenny Hipp had finished from five meters. In the final minutes, Berlin ran at it, but FC kept the lead over time.

Now derby against Leverkusen

The Cologne team will be challenged again in the Bundesliga on Thursday (October 16th/6 p.m.): Then the canceled Rhine derby against Bayer Leverkusen will be rescheduled. The rescheduled game will be played at the Franz Kremer Stadium in Cologne.

The Rhine derby there on October 5th was first interrupted and then canceled when two floodlight masts failed in the 36th minute of the game, whereupon the lighting was no longer sufficient. 1. FC Cologne announced that the floodlight masts are now fully functional again.
