The new Aston Martin Dbx S makes its debut on the panoramic roads overlooking the sea of Mallorca. Brazenly “S”, with that suffix that has distinguished the sportiest cars from the Gaydon company since the beginning of the century, it thunders with its 727 total horsepower and speeds through the hairpin bends that lead to Sa Calobrae and the Serra de Tramuntana with lots of carbon to lighten it and the performance of a true supercar. With the updated 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 made even more powerful using turbo technology transferred directly from the Valhalla hypercar, the Dbx S becomes the most powerful combustion engine SUV in the world. The new Dbx S can already be ordered at a starting price of 264,504 euros.

1How the Aston Martin Dbx S is made

The new Aston Martin Dbx S is the latest evolution of the SUV supercar, arriving with more power, less weight and even greater responsiveness at the top of the rev range, with that heart-pounding S suffix that harks back to the DB3S racing cars of the 1950s and distinguishes all the special high-performance versions of Gaydon’s cars. The engine is the updated version of the AMG-derived 4-liter Twin-Turbo V8, which reaches 727 horsepower using turbo technology transferred directly from the 1,079 horsepower Valhalla plug-in hybrid hypercar. And it is thanks to these 20 horsepower more than the 707 that the new Dbx S surpasses the 725 horsepower V12 of the Ferrari Purosangue, taking the first step of the podium (by two horsepower, but enough to gain the position in the statistics) and becoming the most powerful SUV in the world with only an internal combustion engine. The slimming treatment brings 47 kilos less and the best weight/power ratio of SUVs on the market, thanks to innovations such as the new option of the enormous carbon fiber roof, which with its almost three square meters becomes the largest carbon element ever mounted on an Aston Martin, and the 23” magnesium wheels. At first glance the Dbx S is aggressive without giving up that conscious elegance that has always characterized the Gaydon company, with fluid and perfect proportions, a large honeycomb grille inspired by the DBS 770 Ultimate, front splitter, rear diffuser and new overlapping quad exhausts, which give full voice to the sound of the engine at maximum power.

2Aston Martin Dbx S, the interior

Even the passenger compartment envelops with all the refinement expressed in a sporty version that is expected from an Aston Martin: classic and modern blend in controls that alternate analogue and digital in the name of greater practicality requested by the brand’s customers themselves. Everything is exclusive for this S version, from the carbon fiber inserts, to the Alcantara and semi-aniline leather upholstery, red belts and “S” logos and a new herringbone – herringbone pattern – on the seats and even on the headliner if you choose the carbon roof. The level of standard equipment is excellent, with the absolute novelty of Apple CarPlay Ultra, the most radical evolution ever made by Apple in the world of automotive infotainment, which makes the Dbx S the first car to be equipped with this technology. Also standard is the 800W Aston Martin Premium audio system with 14 speakers, developed using advanced hardware and equipped with surround mode with QuantumLogic for a totally immersive sound experience; and for true enthusiasts there is the optional system developed with Bowers & Wilkins and specifically designed from an acoustic point of view for the volume and shape of the interior of the Dbx S.

3Engine and chassis

The heart of the new Dbx S is the 4-litre Aston Martin Twin-Turbo V8 derived from AMG, increased to 727 HP and 900 Nm of maximum torque thanks to new turbines derived from Valhallawhile other changes to the internal elements and electronic management have made it possible to make power delivery more aggressive at high revs. The result is a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.3 seconds and a 0 to 200 km/h acceleration reduction time of 0.3 seconds. The maximum speed of 310 km/h remains unchanged. Like the Dbx 707, the Dbx S distributes its power in variable proportions to the front and rear wheels, including the ability to send 50% of its torque to the front wheels and up to 100% of the same to the rear wheels only, all through an innovative 9-speed transmission with wet clutch, which eliminates the need for a traditional torque converter, providing extreme performance. Shift points have been adjusted to reflect the car’s wider rev range, while downshifts in Sport and Sport+ modes when the car is in automatic are even more aggressive. The transmission ratio has also been revised, becoming slightly faster and improving agility; shift points have been adjusted to reflect the car’s wider rev range, while downshifts in Sport and Sport+ modes when the car is in automatic are even more aggressive. Like its Dbx 707 stablemate, the car distributes its power in variable proportions between the front and rear wheels, including the ability to send 50% of its torque to the front wheels and up to 100% of the same to the rear wheels only. The carbon-ceramic braking system is also the one already introduced on the latest variant of the Dbx 707 with 420 mm at the front and 390 mm at the rear.

4How’s the Dbx S going?

Get behind the wheel of the new one Aston Martin Dbx S it means not missing anything. There is no need to prioritize, because everything you need is there: space and load capacity, style and luxury in abundance but never loud, and above all the performance promised by this “S” which we also find on the sides with the typical metal finish and in the interior. Once out of Las Palmas we maintain a constant cruising speed on the long straights that lead towards the mountain. The ride is comfortable and silent, although the four new exhaust pipes are ready to make the twin-turbo V8 thunder at any moment. The hairpin bends make everything more fun. And even if the Dbx S rattles when it feels put to the test, the feeling is always that of always having everything under control, in extreme safety. To tame size and power we can count on carbon-ceramic brakeswhich never get tired and guarantee an immediate response even after the many stresses of these narrow roads that lead north through Pollença and Escorca, before descending towards the lively town of Sóller. When cornering, the Dbx S is agile thanks also to the new carbon fiber roof, shaped in a single wave shape, which eliminates drafts and reduces mass at the highest point of the car by around 18 kilos, lowering the center of gravity and consequently improving stability. Even the choice of the optional 23″ magnesium wheels allows us to save a further 19 kg of weight, improving driving quality, precision and steering sensation. The hilly landscape that takes us towards Santa Maria del Camí passes quickly and we enjoy the view pampered by this gentle giant, ready to unleash its power at any moment. Technology is at our service, without confusing us with digital excesses. With the exception of the new Apple CarPlay Ultra debuts for the first time in the world on this car, integrating the smartphone into the car completely to the delight of the “hyper-connected” and allowing navigation data and music to be displayed on a customizable interface, which also extends to the digital dashboard.
