Wekema was an alderman in the municipality of Noordenveld for twelve years. He thinks it’s time for something different. He doesn’t know yet what that ‘different’ will be. “It’s time for a new challenge,” said Wekema.
In April 2014, Wekema became an alderman in the municipality of Noordenveld for the first time. During those years, he says he experienced many great moments, but also lesser ones. For example, the closure of OBS De Marke in Roden. Because the floor of the oldest part of the school was affected by rust. “The school had to close its doors just before the Christmas holidays. Three years later we were able to build a beautiful building again.”
Wekema is currently one of the longest-serving aldermen in Drenthe, together with alderman Jeroen Huizing from Coevorden. Still, he thinks it’s time to do something else. “Being a councilor demands a lot from my family. You often have to work in the evenings and on weekends. That is why it is now time for something different.”
Second councilor to quit
Wekema is the second alderman of the municipality of Noordenveld who has decided to quit. Kirsten Ipema (Municipal Interests) has also announced that she will not return after March 2026.
