After Ukrainian troops brought the Russian advance to a standstill in many places two weeks ago, the government of President Volodymyr Zelenskyj (44) is now starting a counter-offensive.

The fact is: Over the weekend, Ukrainian soldiers liberated five towns that had previously fallen under Putin’s rule within 24 hours. Hundreds of Russians were killed, injured or captured in these attacks.

► In the south, Ukrainian units advanced on the provincial capital Cherson, which was occupied by the Russians. On Sunday they captured the village of Tomyna Balka, 30 kilometers west of the city. With 280,000 inhabitants, Cherson is the only provincial capital that the Kremlin has so far been able to bring under its control. Losing Cherson would be particularly bitter for Putin.

► In the Sumy region, east of Kyiv, Ukrainian troops liberated the town of Trostianets (20,000 inhabitants) on Saturday Russia had brought under his control on the first day of the war. Pictures showed the badly damaged train station in the center of the city under Ukrainian control. According to reports, individual Ukrainian units have even advanced from the location to the border with Russia.

► Ukrainian associations suddenly advanced in the city of Kharkiv in the east of the country. On Saturday they recaptured two suburbs and on Sunday the village of Husarivka, located at a strategically important crossroads, which Putin’s military had previously converted into a fortress. Here the Ukrainian army captured numerous military vehicles, including tanks and multiple rocket launchers.

► There is also new hope for the capital Kyiv, which the Russians wanted to encircle. Ukrainian troops captured the town of Lukyanovka, 50 kilometers from Kyiv. From here, Putin’s troops received their supplies for the battle for the capital.

Only in the Donbas, in the east of the country, did Russian troops gain further territory. The situation is particularly bad in the completely destroyed city of Mariupol, the second largest city in the Donetsk region. Deputy Mayor Serhiy Orlov told BILD that people lived there “like mice, like in the Middle Ages”.

There is neither water nor electricity. And Russia is constantly bombing the city.
