Defense is looking to collaborate with companies to learn to work with drones on a large scale. These unmanned systems are becoming increasingly important in military operations. They help soldiers see better what is happening and work more safely. The Production Security Unmanned Systems Action Plan (APOS) ensures that Defense can quickly create and adapt new drones.
The war in Ukraine shows that drones can be used in many ways. That is why Defense wants the Netherlands to develop and produce more drones itself. The organization is now making an official call, a so-called tender. Dutch start-ups and other companies can respond to this, possibly together, and offer their ideas. This is possible until October 29, 2025.
Within APOS, all defense units work together to realize the best unmanned systems for the units. The Dutch market is also being strengthened, so that more parts and systems are made in our own country.
Test area
Together with the Province of South Holland, Defense is working on the first Dutch test area for drones. Drones can also fly there out of sight of the pilot. This way, Defense remains prepared for the most important tasks.
Prime Minister Schoof previously said that the Netherlands wants to play a leading role in this area within the European Union. APOS, the close cooperation with Ukraine and the experience gained from the NATO summit give the Netherlands a good starting position for this.
