Despite contact with Manuel Neuer, Nagelsmann is not planning a comeback for the goalkeeper for the national team. Oliver Baumann remains number one – at least for the time being.

Before the World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg, national coach Julian Nagelsmann once again curbed speculation about a possible comeback by Manuel Neuer to the national team.

“Olli said it well. It is not advisable to talk about all the possible constellations that could occur,” said the 38-year-old, alluding to his current number one, Oliver Baumann. “Things can always happen that require certain measures,” said the trainer.

Nagelsmann emphasized again that Neuer’s comeback in the DFB jersey is not an issue “as of now.” However, he added that he had already “experienced a lot” in the goalkeeper position.

The national coach confirmed that there was still an exchange with Neuer. “We have a good relationship,” said Nagelsmann. But the conversations weren’t just about football.

After Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona) was injured again, Nagelsmann chose Baumann as his first alternative. The national coach is still counting on Ter Stegen to return for the 2026 World Cup.

Nagelsmann does not see a problem in the goalkeeping position. “In all of these games since Manu resigned of his own free will, we have never had a goalkeeper who was to blame for us not winning. We have always had a goalkeeper who played his part when we were successful,” said Nagelsmann.

Looking ahead to the game against Luxembourg, the DFB coach was confident: “I’m very happy that Olli can play a good game in his home stadium,” he said about Baumann, who is under contract with TSG Hoffenheim.
