Fought through the heat: Laura Siegemund reached the quarter-finals in Wuhan with great effort.

The 37-year-old beat Poland’s Magdalena Frech 6:4, 7:6 (7:2) in temperatures of around 34 degrees and thus reached the round of the last eight for the second time this season.

Siegemund, who caused a sensation at Wimbledon by reaching the quarter-finals, persistently worked her way into the game after an unfortunate start and harassed her opponent with her variable game. Now a duel with French Open winner Coco Gauff could wait if the American solves her previous task.

Ice packs for Siegemund during breaks

The weather conditions continue to be a challenge for the athletes. “I didn’t think I would survive given the conditions,” Siegemund said with a laugh after her somewhat surprising success against Mirra Andrejewa in the second round.

Even during the breaks in the game against Frech, she kept holding ice packs on her head and body to cool herself down. The reward for her efforts is the German number one in the ranking, which she will take over again.
