Popp & Co. make it clear – She-Wolves beat PSG at the start

With a clear opening success, VfL Wolfsburg is setting an exclamation mark in the premier class. This means that VfL is prepared for the upcoming top game in the Bundesliga.
Women’s Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg has made a successful start to the new Champions League season. One day after Bayern’s 7-1 debacle at top favorites FC Barcelona, the Wolves beat Paris St. Germain 4-0 at home in front of 1,734 spectators.
A corner led to a quick 1-0 for Wolfsburg. Former national team captain Alexandra Popp headed the ball at the first post, but in the middle Jackie Groenen lost her balance under pressure from Caitlin Dijkstra and maneuvered the ball into her own goal (7th). PSG took a long time to get into the game, but were close to equalizing. After the guests’ pressure phase, Ella Peddemors struck after a remarkable combination (42′).
After the break, Paris increased the pressure, but carelessly missed the chances. National goalkeeper Stina Johannes made brilliant saves on several occasions. After counterattacking, coach Stephan Lerch’s team initially missed making it 3-0, but Popp made it 3-0 shortly before the end when she headed a deflected Huth cross over the line (90th).
In stoppage time, Janina Minge converted a hand penalty to make the final score (90+5). PSG defender Elisa De Almeida had previously blocked a cross with her hand, as video evidence revealed.
The Wolfsburg women are now ready for the top game in the Bundesliga. VfL hosts FC Bayern, who are tied on points, on Saturday (3 p.m.) before the Lerch team plays their second Champions League game the following Wednesday in Oslo against Valerenga IF.
