SGS Essen reacts a few days after the dismantling against VfL Wolfsburg. The bottom team in the Bundesliga is parting ways with two people in charge.
After a disappointing start to the new season, SGS Essen has drawn personnel consequences. As the Bundesliga club announced on Wednesday, team boss Robert Augustin and sporting director Thomas Gerstner, who also officially served as head coach, are parting ways. The decision was the result of a “detailed analysis of the current situation,” said the club.
Assistant coach Jessica Wissmann will temporarily take over responsibility on the sidelines. The 34-year-old will look after the team at the away game in Leipzig on Friday (6.30 p.m./MagentaSport).
Essen suffered a clear 8-0 defeat against VfL Wolfsburg last Saturday. After five matchdays, the club is at the bottom of the table with just one point.
Augustin has been working as an assistant coach in Essen since 2023 and took on the role of head coach at the start of the season. Gerstner also joined SGS during the current season and has been responsible for the sporting area since then.
