The Isala Hospital, with a location in Meppel and Zwolle, has climbed to place 12 at the annual stress test under Dutch hospitals. In 2023, Isala was rated with a 4, a year later that became a 7. Even with the Treant, which Hospitals has in Emmen, Hoogeveen and Stadskanaal, there is an improvement, as the organization still scores an insufficient one.

The Wilhelmina Hospital Assen was not included in the annual stress test of BDO Accountants & Adviseurs. The financial statements did not have done that on time.

On all parts that BDO tests, Isala scores better than a year earlier, which increased 37 places on the list of Dutch hospital compared to a year earlier.

According to the hospital, the assessment has risen due to better financial results. “These are so good because we have been able to help more patients, which has increased sales. We also looked at which areas we can work more efficiently and where we can permanently reduce our costs.”

The hospital emphasizes that the financial result must continue to improve “necessary investments in training, equipment buildings, IT and a healthy working environment. This way we can bring the qualitative care that patients need.”

In 2023, Treant scored a 3, a heavy insufficient. In 2023, Treant scored poorly on the ‘liquidity ratio’, which is the possibility to pay off debts in the short term. A year later, the organization is a lot better in this area, although the buffer does not remain broad.

The St. Jans Gasthuis in Weert comes out of the bus as a hospital with the highest score, followed by Albert Schweitzer Hospital with locations in South Holland. At the bottom of the list is Bernhoven Hospital in Uden.

The report from BDO paints a varying picture about the current situation of Dutch hospitals. On the one hand, hospitals show a cautious financial recovery, but ‘problems surrounding investment arrears and increasing personnel costs are increasing and continuing continuity under pressure’.

What is also striking is that for the first time two university medical centers (UMC), in Nijmegen and Amsterdam, score insufficiently. One of the recommendations that the Accountantsbureau makes is investing more in digitization, to improve productivity and reduce personnel pressure.
