The cycling team Israel Premier Tech will be called differently in the future. The management decided to “rename the team to break away from its current Israeli identity”.

The team announced on Monday (06.10.25). In addition, the Israeli-Canadian billionaire and team owner Sylvan Adams will withdraw from day-to-day business with a view to the coming year.

Due to the military approach of Israel in the Gaza Strip, there have recently been controversial against the racing team, which became particularly clear during the massive protests during the Spain tour of Vuelta. “Progress often requires victims in sport, and this step is essential to secure the future of the team”, It was said in the communication of the team, for which the German cyclist Pascal Ackermann drives.

The step takes place a few days before the end of an important period: Until October 10, the teams must submit their official name as part of the licensing process of the World Association UCI. Adams had already announced the renaming at the end of September. The racing team would soon be announced how and under which name it continues.

The Gaza War

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas committed a large -scale attack on Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and numerous others were dragged into the Gaza strips. To date, around 50 hostages are dead or alive in the violence of Hamas.

Israel reacted with a military retaliation offensive to destroy the structures of Hamas. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health controlled by the Hamas, more than 67,000 people were killed. Large parts of the buildings and the infrastructure in the Gaza Strip are destroyed, the location of the civilian population is catastrophic.

A Commission of the UN Human Rights Council accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. Israel rejects this and finally started a soil offensive to take Gazastadt. The United States presented a plan to end the war. Among other things, he provides for the complete disarmament of Hamas, which should no longer be involved in the administration of the Gaza Strip. According to Israel, the Hamas agreed with parts and demanded negotiations.

Sanctions in sport have been challenged, but not yet implemented

Especially on the tour of the Spain, Propalestinian protests had disturbed the race over the entire period of the Vuelta. The final stage in mid -September had to be canceled after people in Madrid had promoted barrier grids onto the street and there had been gatherings with the police. The protests were directed against the Israeli procedure in the Gaza Strip and also against the participation of the team Israel Premier Tech.

The Radsport World Association UCI displaced the pro-Palestinian protests at the Vuelta and reacted significantly to the demands of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who had asked for an exclusion of Israeli teams and athletes. One condemned “The instrumentalization of sport for political purposes in general and in particular through a government is greatest”explained the UCI. It should be regret that “The Spanish Prime Minister and his government have supported measures that could hinder the smooth running of a sports competition and, in some cases, expressed their admiration for the demonstrators”.

Sanctions against Israel have already been challenged in sports, also by an expert commission of the UN Human Rights Council. However, the demands have not yet been implemented. The IOC rejected measures against Israeli teams and athletes. The UEFA and FIFA have so far refrained from sanctions in football.

The persistent controversy also led sponsor factor and co -financier Premier Tech threatened to leave the team. “There is simply a certain amount of controversy around the brand that we cannot tolerate “said factor founder Rob Gitelis to cyclingnews.
