Routinier Péter Gulácsi could have left RB Leipzig this summer. “There was already interest from clubs from abroad,” said the 35-year-old keeper of the “Bild” newspaper. “But my consultant Hasan Cetinkaya and I had very open conversations with Marcel Schäfer (sports director; d. Red.). So I knew that I was definitely planned for this season in the squad.”
“For me, this club and the city means so much that I would have reluctant to give up in the summer,” emphasized Gulácsi, who came to Leipzig ten years ago and took third place in the club’s record player ranking. It was a matter of course for him to stay and to fight the regular place in the goal. RB had given 18 players (including nine borrowing) and took 195 million euros, in return seven new additions came for EUR 116 million. Arthur Vermeeren (20), after a previous loan for 20 million euros, and then awarded to Olympique Marseille, was not counted here.
Coach Ole Werner had committed himself to Gulácsi as number one in mid-August, Maarten Vandevoordt (23) had left a look, but can at least be in the DFB Cup. “I am glad that the decision was made, but it was tight, I am already aware of it. I think it was a 50:50 story until the decision,” said Gulácsi.
Goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi wants to continue at RB Leipzig
The Hungarian is one of six players in his last contract year. Whether Gulácsi will be extended again is in the stars, but he could imagine: “It is also aware that it will not go on like this forever, at some point the time where it is over. But I feel very good and say that my career has to go and will continue in summer. Of course, it would be that it is here. But you have to see how the plans are not yet talking about the future.”
The 58-time national goalkeeper does not feel the attraction of “definitely trying something else, but I appreciate what I have”. For an extension, he must have the feeling of being valuable and feeling comfortable. Most recently, he had signed a new contract in May 2024.
