Not Oscar Piatri, Lando Norris or Max Verstappen is the pole man at the Grand Prix of Singapore: George Russell secured the pole position for the Formula 1 race on Sunday (racing start from 2:00 p.m.) with a real fabulous round on Saturday afternoon.
“It was great! Yesterday was a challenging day, for various reasons. It is nice to come back with a good result,” said the Mercedes driver after the overall seventh pole position of his Formula 1 career.
He was almost two tenths of a second faster than Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, the World Cup leader Oscar Piatri continues to put pressure on it. Piatri himself headed his McLaren to third place, while teammate Lando Norris only became a disappointing fifth.
However, the winner of the day was clearly George Russell, who continued after his fastest qualifying round: “Sure, it will be a long race tomorrow. I knew that the car had potential here. The boys did a great job so far throughout the weekend. We could see that yesterday afternoon. I am very happy to be on the pole. Singapore has not always been friendly in the past.”
Tsunoda in the second Red Bull only 15.
The hardest adversary on race Sunday is likely to be defending champion Max Verstappen, who wants to continue his catch-up against the McLaren duo Piatri and Norris.
“Of course I am a bit disappointed not to be in first place. But so far the weekend has been going really well for us. The car is competitive,” said the Dutch to his place in the first series.
Max Verstappen will once again not be able to build internal support. Yuki Tsunoda was only 15 in the second Red Bull, starting again on Sunday from far back to the Grand Prix.
