The Explosive Clearance Service Defense (EOD) has exploded a large aircraft bomb from the Second World War in the night from Thursday to Friday. Eindhoven Airport is currently being prepared for expansion and that is why the site is actively investigating for remaining explosives.
The bomb, a good 500 pounding from the Second World War, was found this week during soil investigation at the airbase. To prevent chaos in air traffic, it was exploded at night explosively. Earlier research shows that there would be around 37 ‘suspicious objects’ in the ground under the airbase.
The soil investigation, in which several remains from the Second World War have already been found, lasts until October 17. The airport is thoroughly searched because of the new expansion.
Flattened
In the past, Eindhoven Airport has been hit by bombing several times. A week after D-Day, for example, the airport was bombarded by the Americans with no less than eighty thousand kilos of bombs. After the war, more than a thousand craters remained on the spot where the airbase and the airport are now.
Renovation
The renovation of the runway at Eindhoven Airport starts in February 2027. The course will be completely renewed, the airport will have new lighting and there will be a system that makes it possible to land aircraft better at dense fog.
Thanks to the earlier soil clearance, this work can probably start without explosive surprises.
