Former world champion Fabio Cannavaro will apparently look after the Uzbekistan national team at the World Cup next summer. According to the transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 52-year-old Italian gave the Uzbek association his oral promise that an agreement on formal things had been reached. The contract should be signed in the coming one to two days.
According to previous media reports, ex-national coach Joachim Löw is also said to have included the candidate group. The Central Asian country is at the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada for the first time at a final round. The association was looking for a new head coach after the resignation of the Slovenian Srecko Katanec due to health problems.
So far, Cannavaro has mostly been a club coach, most recently he was on the sidelines at Dinamo Zagreb for 14 games. Only the Chinese national team looked after two games. Previously, he had been a coach for almost four years. Cannavaro became world champion in Germany in 2006 as captain of Italy, after which he was awarded a world footballer and the balloon d’Or.
