On Tuesday evening, Werder Bremen’s striker Keke Topp was in the field (89) as many minutes as since the end of March in all competitive games (91) – but not for the professionals. The 21-year-old got the much-enthusiastic playing time in the 2nd team. In the regional league game against VfB Lübeck (4: 0), Topp not only belonged to the starting eleven again after 402 days, but also provided a template.

In view of his low chances in the Bundesliga team, where he was entered four times in the second round this season, Ex-Club FC Schalke 04 looks excited about Topps situation, according to the “Bild”. However, there have been no conversations or even a request. For the royal blue, Topp had scored 25 times in 38 games for the U19 and five times in 27 games for the professionals. Then in 2024 the return to the Werder youth club took place for 2 million euros.

Topps start in Bremen was actually great: in his debut in the DFB Cup against Energie Cottbus (3: 1), he scored all three goals for the green-whites. However, he could not work out a regular place in the Bundesliga under Ole Werner, and also failed with a syndesmosis tape tear between the end of November 2024 and the end of February 2025. Topp’s situation has not improved significantly under the new trainer Horst Steffen, newcomers Victor Boniface (24) and the nominal foreigners Justin Njinmah (24) and Marco Grüll (27) have to be ahead.

When asked about the “Bild” on top, the Bremen license area manager Peter Niemeyer did not want to know anything about a departure in January: “We currently have no intentions to give it in winter.” The attacker got the chance in preparation, but the competition was “of course great. He stands.” In any case, the detour via the regional league shows commitment, which should be received positively at the coaching team. If nothing changes in his situation until January, the discussions about a possible air change should take up speed.
