Gaël Monfils announced the end of his tennis career. With the decision he is at pure.
Gaël Monfils will be preserved for another year – after that is over. The Frenchman has announced that he ended his career after the 2026 season. “The next year will be my last as a professional tennis player,” wrote the 39-year-old on Wednesday on Instagram. Monfils emphasized that the sport means everything, but with his decision it was completely at peace.
The professional born in Paris was considered part of a highly traded French generation around Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon. Despite numerous successes, Monfils was denied a Grand Slam title. At the French Open 2008 and the US Open 2016, he made it to the semi -finals. He reached his best placement in the world rankings in 2016 with sixth.
In his long career, Monfils celebrated 13 titles on the ATP tour, most recently he triumphed in Auckland in January 2025. Again and again injuries threw him back: he had to suspend a total of 13 Grand Slam tournaments-among other things because of problems with the knees, shoulder, foot and wrist.
In private, Monfils is married to the Ukrainian player Elina Switolina, the couple has a daughter.
