Winkel owner Ruben van der Ham wants to make short work of the impersonal behavior of his customers. When they enter with ears in or headphones, they are not helped, but referred to a sign that states that he helps the next customer in line. Most customers respond positively to his idea that people now have to make more conscious contact with him. But not everyone is happy with it: “Some think I should not interfere with their behavior.”

Annoyance

The measure stemes from annoyances that have occurred for some time, says the shop owner. “Customers do not say goodbye, no longer make eye contact or do not ask anything anymore. They push their phone under your nose and expect service,” says Van der Ham.

Social contact is healthy

Experts think that since the Coronapandemie we have forgotten what it is like to make superficial contact with each other. That while we are social beings who need a chat. Superficial contact can already produce fabrics that can provide us with our basic needs to feel happy. A chat in a store can therefore ensure a better day for yourself, but certainly also for the store employee. Ruben: “I work hard. Then I just want contact. A good afternoon, a look.”
