Jerrel L. walks to Snackbar ‘Aggie’ in the evening of 17 June 2024 to get a shawarma sandwich, it is three weeks after he moved from the Redules to the Jordaan.
At the snack bar he finds the later victim, a man through whom he – in his own words – had already been robbed in the past. “He immediately jumped up and started intimidating me,” said the suspect today. “And before I knew it, I got a blow. I didn’t know what was going on.” According to the owner of the snack bar, the final victim came in his business earlier and asked for food without wanting to pay. He asked the man to go outside and sit there. There he started screaming against people on the street, according to the snackable owner. Later research shows that he is under the influence of cocaine and alcohol.
Camera images
In the meantime, L. has gone inside and is waiting for his food a few meters away. In the meantime, he makes movements with his hand in his inner pocket. On questions from the court what he did with that hand, he says he was looking for a lighter who was very dear to him. He got up once to smoke – as he says himself. But ‘Aggie’ managed to change his mind at the time.
The images show how the final victim walks into the snack bar and seeks the confrontation again. If L. is waiting for his order, he will be scolded in Arabic. While the suspect is stoically there, the victim finally bends over him and threatens him. ‘Aggie’ knows how to work the victim outside again.
‘Smoking a cigarette’
Jerrel L. then decided to start smoking a cigarette outside and – according to witnesses – an annoying conversation arises again. L. gets another blow and goes back inside. He is followed by the fatal victim. Things are said and the latter hits himself in the face. Then you can see how the suspect grabs his knife that he has in his inside pocket and sticks several times. Research shows that the victim has three stab wounds, one of which is in the neck. With the injuries he still knows how to run to the cafe around the corner, but later dies from his injuries.
L. stated today about the moment of stitches and says that he was acting out of fear: “I was already anxious from the first blow. He was very unpredictable and he seemed to be crazy. I couldn’t surely and did not know what would happen. I thought he was going to attack me again and I still wanted to be in his eyes. I was not bounded.” For that reason, according to his lawyer, he should be acquitted: “He thought he was in a life -threatening situation and had to defend himself.”
‘A normal day’
But according to the Public Prosecution Service, there can be no self -defense and should be assumed. The public prosecutor therefore demanded a prison sentence of 9 years. The acting of the suspect was completely excessive towards the position of the OM. Noody weather or bad weather excess was not the case with the Public Prosecution Service, because the victim’s attack on the suspect had already been terminated. Possibly that previous events played that day in the actions of the suspect, such as a fight with the neighbors and his drinking.
Although the suspect – apart from the stabbing – looks back on a fairly normal day, it is noticeable that he had already had several conflicts and, for example, had been sent away at the café ‘Kat in the Wijngaert’, because he was telephoning loudly. In addition, he got into an altercation with neighbors and, according to a witness, there was a loud discussion with someone from Restaurant Caramba on the Lindengracht, a place where he had worked. Because of these events, L. said it was uncertain and therefore decided – with 1.7 alcohol promillage in his blood – to carry a knife when he went to the snack bar.
Alcohol problem
L. says he is not an aggressive person today, but the court asked him today why he then has several convictions on his criminal record. It is about destruction, threat and abuse. The suspect has no explanation for it, but his alcohol problems could have played a solid role in it, he thinks so.
A psychologist who investigated him writes that he keeps annoyance and tensions. From the age of 12 there were behavioral problems and an aggressive attitude. Probably in a strong use of substance use. Experts think he uses resources to push away those feelings.
The court later rules in the case.
