Decision:

“Martijn works at a large Dutch multinational in health technology. We had been dreaming abroad for years. When he had a great opportunity in New York, we grabbed it with both hands. I canceled my job as a manager at a large welfare organization and started my own company. I now help female managers on my own conditions and part tips on Instagram. for the children. ”

American friendships:

“Americans are surprisingly open. The prejudice is that they are superficial, but that’s not how we experience it. You make it easy to contact here. Of course no deep conversations immediately, but it feels just as sincere as a Dutchman. I have met many nice people in a short time: in the playground, on the schoolyard and even via Facebook. I received very nice reactions.”

Typical Dutch:

“We let our cargo bike come over from the Netherlands. Ideal. In New York it is good cycling. We stand out; I have only seen three other cargo bikes. I bring the children to school and cycle through the city or through Central Park.”

Our house:

“We live in Hoboken, because of the great school for our children. We look out over Manhattan. Our apartment is in a complex with swimming pool and gym. Smaller than in the Netherlands, with two bedrooms and a small living room, we still live here wonderfully. In the summer it is warm, so the swimming pool is a solution for the children. In the future I will see us again in the Netherlands.”

Shopping:

“Shopping in New York is wonderful. Soho is very cozy, with large designer houses and brands such as Sézane and Anthropology. But Bleecker Street in West Village remains my favorite: nice atmosphere and unique boutiques. Many women wear sportswear in their free time, especially from Lululemon or Alo. But in my regular outfit. Sneakers are then a no-go. “

Nicest: “How people stand here in life, very positive. Many people live with the Pay It Forward principle, are very helpful and give each other compliments. That is very contagious.”

Least: “The bureaucracy. There are many rules and they still work with old systems. And the tip culture. You have to give a lot of tip here.”

Mist: “Going for a quick coffee with family and friends
