“Left and then on the right. Come on! Harder!”, Boxer Nieky Holzken shouts from the Markt in Helmond to the 11-year-old Dua. The teenager is on Friday at the official kick -off of the National Sports Week. That is an initiative of NOC*NSF to make sport and exercise visible and accessible to everyone. And many top athletes are called for that.
Everything will be organized in the field of sport in the center of Helmond. For young and old. In addition to Holzken, the stopped swimmer Kira Toussaint and Britt Eerland, who made the eighth final of table tennis during the Olympic Games, are also there. The top athletes give lessons to whoever wants to.
“You can really do anything: kickboxing, dancing, table tennis. Really everything,” says Dua fascinated. Especially the kickboxing under the leadership of Holzken made a big impression on her. “I have learned a lot from him. He himself kicked in a ring where a lot of people come to look. If someone comes close to me, I can now give hard punches and kick. You get the feeling that you are safe.”
“Nieky is super cool, suddenly there is a world champion for you.”
There has been much to do about the safety of women on the street lately. Although Holzken mainly wanted the children to work out in his birthplace on Friday, he finds the resilience of women an important topic. “Too many crazy things are happening in the Netherlands. I have a daughter of fifteen years old who I also learned how to defend herself.”

Miraç (10) also looks his eyes when he gets a lesson lesson. “Nieky is super cool. Suddenly there is a world champion for you,” says the 10-year-old. The kickboxer is also happy to contribute. “It’s nice to do something for the children. Movement and resilience are important. I would like to contribute to that,” says Nieky.
Miraç appears to have another goal in addition to exercising. “The first thing I said to Nieky,” Can I have a signature? “” He got a nice place on his green shirt. Miraç also proudly removes a folded piece of paper from his jacket pocket to show another signature of the kick boxer.

The National Sports Week lasts until 28 September. Helmond is one of the five cities that turns out extra large this year. All sorts of sports activities are held throughout the week for young and old.
