A majority of the EU member states today approved the application of Renure. This has taken an important step towards the admission of this innovative fertilizer. Renure is an edited form of animal manure that can be used as a fertilizer replacement. This helps to reduce manure surpluses, to relieve pressure on the manure market and to better use valuable nutrients from their own manure. With this decision, Europe is taking an important step towards a more sustainable manure policy and more efficient raw materials.

Minister Wiersma of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) responds with pleasure:

“This is a huge milestone for Dutch agriculture. Farmers have been asking for years, and now there is finally air in manure problems. With Renure we can use valuable nutrients from animal manure and become less dependent on fertilizer from outside the EU. It is a smart, innovative solution that has been good for farmer, soil and environment to the Netherlands, and here is not the harsh hardy, along with the cleverly, together – with the hard -hearted hard hard hard hardly hard hardly hard, together – with the extremely hard hardly hard hardly striking hardly hard hardly strict hardness – together – and with the extremely hard -hard hardly striking hardly hardly stretched hardly hard hardness – and with the extreme hardly hardly stretched hardly hard hardness to be very much hardly hard and here. What is Renure?

Renure stands for recovered nitrogen from manure. It is a processed form of animal manure, where the nutrients, such as nitrogen, become available in a more useful form. The end product looks like fertilizer, but comes from its own cycle. Because Renure meets strict environmental requirements, it can be applied safely without risks for water quality and soil.

Why is Renure important?

The use of Renure offers several advantages:

  • More room for farmers. Renure gives farmers more opportunities to use manure on their country, within the applicable rules.
  • Smarter use of own raw materials. Valuable nutrients from manure are not lost, but are being used again. This fits in with a circular agriculture, in which waste is prevented.
  • Less dependence on fertilizer. By using less fertilizer – which is often produced with fossil energy such as Russian gas – the Netherlands becomes less dependent on countries such as Russia. This strengthens our strategic position and contributes to more energy independence.

How to proceed?

The vote by the Member States is an important step. In the coming months, the European Parliament and the Council formally also vote on the proposal. In the meantime, the Netherlands is preparing for a rapid introduction. Together with the sector, we look at how farmers who already have experience with the Renure technique can get started quickly and responsibly.
