Hansi Flick and FC Barcelona spoiled Nick Woltemade the Champions League debut with Newcastle United. The Catalans prevailed 2-1 (0: 0) with the English at the end of the 1st match day. Marcus Rashford (58th minute/67th) scored both goals for Flick’s team that deservedly won. Anthony Gordon (90th) was late for the hosts. Newcastle newcomer Woltemade came into play in the 63rd minute, but the ex-Stuttgart team had hardly any scenes.
Superstar Erling, Haaland, who was 2-0 (0-0) against SSC Naples again at Manchester Citys, acted much more conspicuous. The Norwegian had headed City (56.), Jérémy Doku (65th) after a strong solo. The English benefited from an early red card against Naples captain Giovanni di Lorenzo (21st) after an emergency brake against Haaland. For tactical reasons, coach Antonio Conte then took off the field of City legend Kevin de Bruyne.
Sporting Lisbon experienced an even more relaxed evening than Manchester experienced in 4: 1 (1-0) against outsider Cairat Almaty from Kazakhstan. Francisco Trincão (44./64.), Alisson Santos (66.) and Geovany Quenda (68th) scored for the Portuguese champion. Edmilson (86th) was still the honor goal for the Champions League debutant.
