A fire started this afternoon in the asylum seekers’ center in Assen on Schepersmaat. Due to the seriousness of the fire, the building had to be temporarily evacuated.
A spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region said that the cause of the fire was the battery of an electric bicycle, which had flown on the third floor of the building. The burning battery provided a large amount of smoke, so that the fire brigade chose to evacuate part of the building.
Because several people have inhaled the smoke, there was an ambulance to check people. Meanwhile, the majority of the building is accessible again.
