The company and the province agreed in a letter of intent that VDL will invest 10 million euros and Limburg 15 million euros. Of the amount, 5 million euros can be used for extra nature and the quality of life in the environment.

The Provincial Executive of Limburg still needs to be approved by the Provincial States to reserve the money for the development of the factory site. The amount is left of the old budget for area development in Born around the VDL Nedcar car factory, which hoped to expand in 2020. Previous agreements between the company and the province about the construction of a ring road and intersection at the business park are now gone.

Innovation and employment

VDL also wants to further develop the site of the former car factory in addition to the defense industry for sustainable transport, battery and energy systems and the manufacturing industry. “We are in conversation with the province about what these millions will be invested in. The starting point for this is the stimulation of innovation, employment and liveability on the VDL site in Born and in the area,” says Willem van der Leegte, VDL president.

Stephan Satijn, Limburg, states that the development of the VDL site in Born is of great importance for the Limburg economy. “The intended production of military equipment on part of the site fits in seamlessly with the Limburg Defense Agenda. With VDL we are taking steps forward to offer space for defense activities and at the same time we are working on an innovative Limburg manufacturing industry that strengthens and is indispensable for the Netherlands.”
