Today is Prinsjesdag, the traditional opening of the parliamentary year. Around 1 p.m. the royal family leaves with the glass carriage from the palace to the Koninklijke Schouwburg on Korte Voorhout.

King Willem-Alexander reads the speech for that. Princess Ariane will attend the speech for the first time this year. Then the Oranges drive back to Noordeinde Palace, where the balcony scene is at 2 p.m.

The cabinet then presents the Budget Memorandum to the Lower House. That is the budget for next year. The cabinet does not come up with very substantive plans today because it is outgoing and can actually only ‘fit the store’.
