Germany made the rare double of the World Cup and European Championship title perfect and crowned a famous basketball summer. Can some players benefit?
Gold for the world champion, the double is perfect. Two years after Manila’s coup, the German basketball players also got the European championship title in Riga on Sunday evening. The team led by captain Dennis Schröder celebrated 88:83 (40:46) over Turkey in the final and won the second European Championship crown after 1993.
As with the 2023 World Cup, the German team stormed to the title with nine victories from nine games, which made it possible to enter a fine circle. At the same time, the world and European champions had previously only been the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Spain. In the duel of the only two teams unbeaten in the course of the tournament, Isaac Bonga (20 points/t-online note 1) was the best thrower of the German team.
And it was precisely this bonga that was also a major topic of conversation after the final. Because: How is the 25-year-old Guard going on? For Captain Dennis Schröder it was clear: “Bonga belongs in the league!” And according to information from the “Bild”, the NBA, the best league in the world. Bonga knows the league, was already under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Washington Wizards. In the meantime, however, he plays at Partizan Belgrade. Could there be a return?

Not excluded. Isaac Bonga was recognized as the best defender of the tournament, many scouts will have been on site at the European Championship – and have looked closely at Bonga. At Partizan he has a contract until 2027, but according to the “BasketNews” he can still change this summer due to an exit clause. So the path would be free.
Bonga would be according to Dennis Schröder (Sacramento Kings), Maxi Kleber (Los Angeles Lakers), Tristan da Silva (Orlando Magic), Franz Wagner, who – like his brother Moritz – also plays at Orlando – and Isaiah Hartenstein (also injured/Oklahoma City Thunder), the next German star in the NBA.
