The number of elderly people in society is increasing and we are getting older on average. That is why it is important to talk to your environment about what you want to do to stay healthy, stay pleasant or what you can do for each other if care is needed. That way you can continue to enjoy life later. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport helps people over 60 to take a first step with conversation cards from the campaign ‘Talk about tomorrow’. And points to national interview meetings, such as ‘seniors themselves to turn’, ‘powerful aging’ and ‘taking care of yourself, there are for each other’.
Which activities do you get energy from? Who could help you in the garden or with the groceries if it is necessary later? What could you already adjust to your home? Or who in your area can you help with something? These are examples of questions from the conversation cards of the campaign ‘Talk today about tomorrow’. With these cards, people over 60 can have the conversation about later in an accessible way. For example with their families, friends or neighbors.
In addition to the discussion cards, a large number of social organizations organize activities that stimulate the conversation. Such as the conversation meetings ‘Seniors themselves to Zet’ (Seniors Brabant Zeeland, Seniors Limburg and KBO-Senioren-Overijssel), ‘Powerful aging’ (senior coalition) and ‘Taking care of yourself, there are for each other’ (Mantelzorgnl). Meetings where people over 60 can get inspiration about what they can do for later and about this with others.
Nicki Pouw-Verweij, State Secretary Long-term and Social Care: “It is impressive to see that since the start of ‘Talk today’ the conversation has been held in more and more places in the Netherlands. I have seen in practice how much difference it makes if you have the conversation with the people around you on time about later and the first preparations. That gives you peace and ensures that you remain at the steering wheel of your own life.
A first step
Neighborhoods Annie (66) and Thea (67) are already talking about later. And what they can do to continue to live comfortably. Annie: “We have placed light sensors in the hall and between the bedroom and the toilet. That saves in the dark search for light buttons.”
The two neighbor women have also established a neighborhood circle. A group with neighbors who help each other with things that you can’t plan. And who looks back at each other. Annie: “We bring a pan of soup when someone is sick or pick up medicines.” But also for Neighbors know how to find each other better through the neighborhood circle. “A lamp that is broken with an older neighbor is being replaced by the neighbor. And when someone’s daughter goes on vacation, we look around to that neighbor together. In the past, family had to come for that, now we solve it together.”
