Gianmarco Tamberi once celebrated his greatest success in Tokyo. Now the Athletics World Cup in Tokyo ended very early for him.

Around three years after his emotional Olympic victory, Gianmarco Tamberi failed early on the village of his greatest success. The Italian high jumper missed the final of the World Cup in Tokyo.

Tamberi jumped only 2.16 meters in qualification – too little to secure the ticket for the decision on Tuesday. The European champion visibly had problems with the start -up and the technology, his left ankle was dicked. After the end, he reacted stunned, kept his hands struck in front of the face and ran through the stadium shaking his head.

His long -time competitor and friend Mutaz Essa Barshim is not at all in Tokyo. The co-Olympic champion from 2021 from Qatar canceled his participation due to a foot injury shortly before the title fights began.

The duo, which had caused one of the most moving moments in athletics three years ago, lacks in the Tokyo nation Stadium. Back then, Barshim and Tamberi decided against a jump -off and were happy about gold together.

From a German perspective, there was also no reason to be happy. Tobias Potye failed like Tamberi at the height of 2.16 meters. The Vice European Champion of 2022-as already at the Olympic Games in the previous year-missed the final. The last World Cup medal for Germany in the high jump is long ago: Raúl Spank won bronze in 2009 in Berlin.
