With a victory against Cameroon, Cape Verde has brought himself into an ideal position for the World Cup qualification. It would be a historical participation.

The dream of the first World Cup participation is getting closer to Cape Verde. In the top game of the Africa qualification, the “blue sharks” in Praia prevailed 1-0 against Cameroon. The team of the island state is therefore four points two games before the end.

Dailon Rocha Livramento scored the decisive goal in the 54th minute. The striker, who is under contract with the Portuguese second division club Casa Pia AC, scored with a remarkable shot. In October, Cape is now enough to win either in Libya or in the home game against Eswatini to solve the ticket for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. If the qualification succeeds, the 69th of the world rankings would be by far the smallest African country that has ever been part of a World Cup.

What is striking is the composition of the team: no player of the 27 nominees is under contract in the home league. Many professionals were born abroad, which is also due to the fact that outside the nine inhabited islands more people with Cape Verdish roots than themselves. The greatest success of the team has so far been the quarter-final participation in the 2013 and 2024.
