A 30-year-old man from Cologne has been sentenced to a fine of 3000 euros for an attempt to scam a dentist in Assen. In addition, a two -week prison sentence was imposed on him.

The man from Germany occurred at the beginning of this year as an employee of a company in Edelmetaal in Joure. He wrote various dentists in the Netherlands an email. He used the company name of the precious metal company with a corresponding email address. In the e -mail he suggested making an appointment to buy remaining crowns and bridges. The practice would be paid immediately after a valuation promised the writer of the mail.

The dentist in Assen found the preamble of the mail special: ‘Hello’, it only said. He missed a personal salutation in the epistle. The name of the sender was also missing. The dentist contacted the company in Joure. The umpteenth dentist who complained about this, it turned out immediately. The Frisian company reported because the good name was abused for suspected scam practices. The owner of the company also decided to make an appointment with this ’employee’. He presented himself as an employee of the Dental Practice in Assen and made an appointment in that practice.

The Frisian entrepreneur already took place in the practice in Assen before the agreed time. The police were also informed about this promotion. It didn’t come to a deal. The suspect was arrested before he could get back into his car. In his car the agents found 8000 euros, hidden in a Bible. The man had another 7000 euros in his jacket pocket. He had no story about the origin of this money. The judge sees sufficient evidence for an attempt at fraud and money laundering.

For this, a community service would have been an appropriate punishment. Because the man lives in Germany, a hefty fine has been chosen for practical reasons. A prison sentence called the judge ‘a step too far’. The punishment is the same as the requirement of the public prosecutor. A few dental practices reported that they were duped in this way. The man from Germany was not on trial for this. “We didn’t get those other things around. We were unable to link them to this suspect,” the public prosecutor replied.
